PRE-EVENT OVERVIEW

The Open Championship, also known as the British Open, is one of the most prestigious and historic golf tournaments in the world. Established in 1860, the championship has a long and storied tradition of showcasing the best golfers from around the globe.

The eyes of the sporting world turn once again to Northern Ireland, where the Claret Jug returns to Royal Portrush — a venue as brutal as it is beautiful.

This is only the third time The Open has graced these grounds. In 1951, Max Faulkner carved his name into history. In 2019, it was Shane Lowry, beloved and fearless, who lifted the Jug before a sea of roaring Irish fans. Now, in 2025, the stakes are deeper, the field sharper, and the shadows of the coastline longer than ever.

The Open is golf’s oldest major — but make no mistake: Portrush is its wildest test.

The Headlines

Rory McIlroy @ 13/2

He has the Masters. He has the Slam. But this one… this is different.

Portrush is less than 90 minutes from Holywood, Rory’s hometown. And though he returns a complete champion, the memories of his missed cut here in 2019 still sting. This is more than golf — it’s a pilgrimage. And for McIlroy, it might just be the last great story yet to write.

“If I could win anywhere, just one more… it would be here.”

Xander Schauffele @ 20/1

He’s not loud. He doesn’t need to be. Schauffele is the reigning Champion Golfer of the Year and a major machine. Few adapt to links golf like he does — patient, fearless, and surgical. Can he become the first back-to-back Open winner since Padraig Harrington?

Bryson DeChambeau @ 16/1

Portrush is unpredictable. Bryson isn’t.

He’s called the course “diabolical,” but DeChambeau has vowed to bring science to the storm — with towering tee shots and calculated risk. But this isn’t a spreadsheet. It’s the raw, rugged edge of Ireland. Can you tame the wind with data?

Shane Lowry @ 20/1

The champion of 2019 returns not just to defend a title — but a legacy. Lowry’s win on home soil became folklore. To do it again would cement him as a legend of Irish sport. The galleries will be deafening. The expectations even louder.

Ones to Watch

  • Scottie Scheffle @ 9/2 – The metronome. Always lurking. World No. 1 for a reason.
  • Collin Morikawa @ 25/1 – The 2021 Open champion has the control to survive these greens.
  • Tommy Fleetwood @ 20/1 – So close, so often. Will Portrush be his moment?
  • Min Woo Lee @ 70/1 – Charisma, swagger, and serious game. A potential breakout.
